Not coincidentally this cut is called Emerald cut, most of the Emeralds are cut into Squares and Rectangles which makes it one of the most popular cuts and gives it that name.
Prices vary depending on: Weight, Color and Crystal, this way the heaviest gemstone available with a DARK GREEN color and a CLEAR crystal is the most expensive gemstone available.
Keep in mind that the bigger the gemstone the less probable it will be a CLEAR gemstone.
Emerald cut is a faceted shape. Faceted shapes are used to cut Emerald Gemstones that have a clear Crystal clarity to obtain an improved reflective effect from the gemstone when looked from different angles.

This is also know as brilliance. Faceted shapes have a Crown and a Pavilion. In the crown lies the table facet or the main face of the gemstone, this is the face you watch when you first hold the gemstone and it covers the 50% of the area in the crown. The Pavilion is the tail of the gemstone cut in such way that light bounces back to the main face in the crown of the gemstone, in the pavilion lies the apex, the bottom of the gemstone cut to be a pointy edge.

The Emerald cut is achieved by cutting parallel rows of striped facets or steps and this is why this cut is also known as the step cut. The crown of an Emerald cut gemstone has 4 crown side facets and 4 crown corner facets. The pavilion has 4 pavilion side facets and 4 pavilion corner facets, these facets are cut in a way that end up in a “line” in the bottom of the gemstone to reflect appropriately the light.
